Welcome to the 138th
St. Louis Day Celebration
August 22 & 23, 2020
Dear Parishioners and St. Louis Day patrons,
Back in February our St. Louis Day Chairpersons committee began planning for our 138th Annual Parish SLD. Then in mid-March the COVID 19 pandemic struck and changed our lives. Our committee continued to meet and plan for our big weekend of festivities. On July 6th, I sent you a letter saying the SLD was not cancelled, but it would be different.
Now, after more meetings and phone conversations, we have made the decision that no one wanted to see. Because of the increasing dangers posed by the coronavirus spreading, particularly in large crowds, we have made the difficult decision to CANCEL ST. LOUIS DAY FOR 2020.
There are a number of practical implications that follow from that decision. Our parish budget includes projected income from SLD at $65,000.00. Losing that amount of money has a significant impact on the budget and our parish operations. I know that every one of you has been impacted financially by the pandemic too. But, I ask those of you who can, to please consider making an extra donation to the parish to help us cover the shortfall. We have sent you an envelope for your meat, slaw and potato salad donation, and some have already sent that in. Thank you. If you would like a refund of that donation, we’ll be happy to give it to you. However, if you would now like to make it a donation, please let us know.
Some meal tickets have been sold. Likewise, we will gladly refund you—just return the tickets. But, again, if you’d like us to consider it a donation, please let us know.
The raffles are a big part of the income that day.
St. Louis Day is our parish festival, a time for our parish community to come together, with many people from all over, to have a fun time. Sadly, our traditional celebration will not happen this year, but the committee is considering another form of a parish celebration later in the year {OctoberFest, NovemberFest!}, when the pandemic is no more, and we can gather in safety. More about this later.
This was not an easy decision to make, and I am certain many will be disappointed. Please know the decision was made in the best interest for all concerned—the workers before, during and after SLD, the meal cooking and serving staff, families who would join us in person, etc.
Please stay safe and healthy, and let us pray for all those who are suffering from COVID, and all those who have died.
St. Louis, pray for us.
Fr. Jim
